The Lady palms are derived from cultivated groups in China.  Then they have been culivated in Japan for a long time and later were brought to Europe and the United States. There is not enough information how it grows in wild.

Name: It is named the Broadleaf Lady palm because the leaves are divided in broad segments. It is called the Bamboo Palm because when leaves shed, they reveal bamboo-like stems.

Genus: Phapis

Origin: It is native to Southern China.

Growth rate: It is slow growing.

Trunk: The slender, bamboo-like or cane-like, sturdy, covered with dark brown coarse fiber stems can grow up to 6-12 feet. The stems are full of leaves from the top to the bottom.

Leaves: The fan-shaped, narrow, glossy, thick textured leaves are divided in 5-12 broad segments with ragged needle-like ends.

Light exposure: It grows well in partial shade.

Water requirements: It has moderate water requirements.

Drought toleration: It is moderate drought tolerant.

Cold toleration: It is relatively cold hardy. It can take temperature down to 20 F.

Flowers: The Lady pam flowers in springs. The inflorescence is short.  The small stalks of pale pink-white flowers come from green bracts from between leaf sheath and have pleasant fragrance. The flowers are dioecious.

Fruits: The fruits are round, fleshy and cream-white in color.

Propagation: It is propagated by seeds or divisions of clumps. The seeds germinate easily.
